Chapter 9: Patterns.
A Major Element in Effective Teaching and Learning.
This chapter explains the patterns in different areas to which
teachers can use for teaching the students depending on their
specialty.
Patterns are highly recommended in teaching and learning.
Researchers like Charles Darwin, through patterns, he formulated the evolutionary theory. Our understanding of heredity was discovered by Gregor
Mendel through patterns. Our brain is a pattern seeking device that relates similarities, differences or relationships between them (Ratey, 2001, p.5).Any time when we learn something new, we create additional new patterns that overrides the old patterns in our brain. This is a changing
process (Whitson & Galinsky,2008).
In a learner – centered classroom, we should concentrate on patterns that give meanings to our students. These are the same patterns we use in our research and teaching. We are supposed to share them with our students (Caine & Caine,1991).Students have recognized different patterns in their daily life. The only problem is that these students don’t use these patterns in their classrooms. The reason might be because they were used to memorizing during their high school learning (Caine, McClintic, & Klimek, 2009).
Recoding is very helpful to the students than just memorizing. Recoding is the process by which students translate the course into their own words. This will help them remember easily because it is written in their own words and style (Deno & Markell, 2001).
Our ancestors used patterns to identify the types of animals to be hunted for food and to understand the type of animals that were harmful to them. Our students can be taught on how to use patterns by teaching them the cause and effect. Some of the patterns by which students are already familiar
with includes hierarchy, alphabetical order and by using their own words.
