Chapter 4: From Lecture to Facilitator.
In this chapter, Doyle explains that giving a helping hand will surely improve learning.
Change is always not easy, especially when students are used to teacher – centered learning, explains the author. The chapter defines the way forward of transition from the so called traditional method of learning to a modern and effective method of learning.
Doyle starts the chapter by defining what a Facilitator is.
An instructor who is willing to help students perform well in their course is a facilitator. Though the term might be defined differently depending on the situation, our aim is to concentrate on teaching, thus we define it according to teaching terms. To be a facilitator is not an easy task. It requires setting up different steps in planning like writing daily learning outcomes, action plan, additional practice and giving feedback. (Doyle, 2011, page 52-58).
The chapter concludes by emphasizing on feedback. Though students complain about the feedback as negative comments that are usually received late, researchers agree that feedback is an essential tool that helps students improve their learning (Doyle, 2011, page 61).
