Chapter 5: Who are Our Learners and how do We Get to Know them Better ?.
Doyle agrees that students will not learn
without communicating with their instructor.
The chapter is about the communication between the teacher and students. There must be a communication to be able to understand that students are learning. This chapter is classified into 3 sections:
The first section describes about the research done by Carol
Dweck. The second part is about understanding our students by interacting with them and the last section talks about the work of Spense Rogers and Lisa Renard who spent 15 years researching on teaching model. (Doyle, 2011, page 64).It is
important to build relationship with our students so that they feel safe in the classroom and want to share their ideas.
Michael Richard’s research was about students’ behaviors and attitudes. He classified the characteristics into Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset. Fixed mindset students are those who believe that their intelligence is fixed and do not believe in working hard while the growth mindset are the ones which value their hard work and ready to face any challenges in learning. I can be classified as in the growth mindset group.
The ending of the chapter describes the different ways of using common sense in building relationships with students. (Doyle, 2011, page 72).
