Chapter 10: Repetition and Elaboration.
This chapter describes the research done by John Medina, John Ratey, Robert Bjork, Janet Zadina and Daniel Schacter. Their research is about our brain. How the brain recalls long term memory and the way of teaching students to have long term memory.
In order for students to recall, they must first pay attention
(Duclucovic & Wagner, 2006).Since they cannot pay attention to everything they see, they always forget what they have already seen. Even though these students pay attention, still scientists are yet to discover the amount of attention the students recall (Mohs, 2010).

Researchers have associated sleep with memory. People, who sleep for 7 to 8 hours daily, tend to have less stress and long term memory. If a person takes a nap after learning new information, remember it better than those who don’t (Walker, 2009). A study on NASA astronauts showed a 37% improvement in memory for those astronauts who napped for 20 to 30 minutes compared to those who don’t (Medina, 2008).
According to the psychologist Elizabeth Loftus from the University of California, there are four major reasons that result in forgetting: retrieval failures, interference, failure to store and motivated forgetting (Cherry, 2010). Another study shows that a combination of caffeine and glucose help to boost our
attention, learning and memory.
This chapter is concluded by explaining what should be done to
our students in order for them to learn. Students were used to memorizing for a long time. They now find it difficult to change their method of learning. We need to explain to them research factors like getting enough sleep, taking a nap and taking breaks between classes contribute to the human brain on learning and remembering. We should support these students in their learning process.
